JANAPRITH FERNANDO

Biography

Janaprith was born on the 23rd of September 1967 in Rathmalana, a city situated in the outskirts of Colombo, to Iromie and Aleric Fernando. Janaprith is the fifth out of the six children in his family. He received his primary education at S. Thomas’ College, Preparatory School and later at S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, two of the most elite schools in the country.

While a young lad of 10 years old Janaprith joined the 39th Colombo Scout Troop at his Alma Mater. Janaprith won his President’s Scout Award in 1984 and later became the scout master of the troop.

In 1988 Janaprith was accepted to the Law College of Sri Lanka. After three years of studying here he successfully passed out as a lawyer and was an associate at the firm Dissanayke Amarathunga.

While working here Janaprith met the love of his life, Avanthi. On the 31st of March 1999 Janaprith got married to Avanthi. Three years later in 2002 Janaprith and Avanthi received their first child, Sarith. The second one, Kshamara, came along three years later.

Janaprith was an Assistant District Commissioner of the Colombo District from 1997 to 2005. He was then appointed the District Commissioner in 2005 and went on to continue as the District Commissioner till 2010. Janaprith was the International Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Scout Association from 2011 to 2016 as-well.

In 2009 Janaprith achieved a huge milestone in his scouting career. He was appointed to the Management Sub Committee of the Asia Pacific Scout Region.

In 2012, in Bangladesh, Janaprith became the first Sri Lankan to be appointed to the Asia Pacific Regional Scout Committee. He still holds this post. Janaprith currently is the Chairman of the Global Support Team of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement. He is also the Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Scout Association.

Janaprith is a well know attorney, best known for practising Civil Law in Sri Lanka. He was the President of the Colombo Law Society from 2007 to 2009. He was also appointed as an Honoris Causa of the Colombo Law Society in 2016.

Janaprith hopes to serve the youth of the world in greater ways by being elected to the World Scout Committee in Azerbaijan this August.
